Tragedy in Brazil: Former Mayor Shoots Estranged Wife in Lawyer’s Office, Then Commits Suicide

Former Mayor Tragedy Brazil

The murder-suicide during divorce signing shocked Brazil after a former mayor killed his estranged wife during a meeting to end their marriage. The case involves Icicléia Alves Veloso, 41, and her estranged husband Romilson Veloso e Silva, 69, a former mayor and councilman. The incident happened at a law office in northern Brazil. Authorities say the separation had lasted three months.

They met on June 3 at a law office to finalize divorce papers. Icicléia Alves Veloso was a 41-year-old businesswoman. Romilson Veloso e Silva, 69, was a former mayor and sitting councilman. Police say he did not accept the separation. During the meeting, he asked his lawyer for a private moment with his estranged wife. The lawyer left the room briefly.

Moments later, gunshots were heard inside the office. CCTV footage shows him approaching her from behind and shooting her in the head while she was seated. He then went to the bathroom and shot himself. This murder-suicide during divorce signing has been described by investigators as a shocking act of domestic violence.

Icicléia was rushed to hospital but died the next day from her injuries. Authorities are investigating the case as femicide followed by suicide. The former mayor’s actions have drawn public attention in Brazil. Icicléia leaves behind three children. The tragedy highlights risks in domestic separation cases and legal meetings involving conflict.
