Sharjah Dubai Travel Time could fall sharply as work continues on the new Al Taawun Tunnel. The major road project is designed to ease congestion between Sharjah and Dubai. Officials expect congestion times to drop by as much as 85 percent once the project is completed.

The Al Taawun Tunnel is being built at Al Taawun Square. It will have three lanes in each direction. The tunnel will be able to handle around 4,000 vehicles per hour during peak times.
The first phase of the road project is expected to be ready in November 2026. However, the complete development is scheduled to finish by the end of February 2027.
New Tunnel To Improve Daily Commutes
The main goal of the project is to create a more direct connection from Al Taawun towards Al Nahda and Dubai. This could make daily journeys easier for thousands of commuters who travel between the two emirates.
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has been working around the clock on the project. In July, the authority said that construction was operating 24/7 and that around 20 percent of the development had been completed.
The project is part of wider efforts to address heavy traffic on major roads linking Sharjah and Dubai. The two emirates see significant daily traffic, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.
More Road Projects Planned
The Al Taawun Tunnel is not the only major transport project underway. A three-lane bridge is also being constructed at the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street and Mleiha Road.
The bridge project has a reported cost of Dh140 million. It is expected to improve traffic movement and support the wider development of Sharjah’s road network.
Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority Chairman Yousif Khamis Al Othmani has said that an integrated transport strategy is being pursued. Improving residents’ quality of life remains a key objective.
Smart And Cleaner Public Transport
Sharjah is also investing in modern public transport. The emirate has introduced electric, hybrid and natural-gas transport options.
Artificial intelligence systems are being used in buses and taxis to improve safety and operational efficiency. Sharjah also plans to expand its Bus on Demand service.
The service allows passengers to book journeys through an app. It covers areas including Muwaileh Commercial, Aljada, University City, Al Juraina, Al Qarain and Al Nouf.
With these projects, Sharjah aims to improve traffic flow and make daily travel more convenient. The new Al Taawun Tunnel could play a major role in reducing pressure on one of the busiest routes between Sharjah and Dubai.
