London: Veteran international journalist Saira Jaffer has announced her appointment as Editor-in-Chief of South Era Network (SEN), marking a new chapter in her two-decade-long media career focused on global storytelling and geopolitical insight.
Sharing the news on LinkedIn, Jaffer said she is “proud” to lead a platform that positions the Global South as “the main character, not the backdrop.”
“I’ve spent much of my career thinking about who gets to frame the story and how easily entire regions get flattened into headlines,” she wrote. “Being from South Asia, I’ve felt it’s often been narrated through crisis or cliché — and it’s never the whole story.”
A vision beyond headlines
At SEN, Jaffer said the goal is not simply to challenge dominant narratives, but to build “fuller and more honest” ones — journalism that values depth over noise, context over reaction, and lived reality over stereotype.
The London-based journalist brings more than 20 years of experience across global newsrooms, including senior editorial and planning roles at Al Jazeera English, CNN International, Thomson Reuters, CGTN Europe, and Middle East Eye.
Her career spans frontline reporting, political coverage, conflict zones, cultural shifts, and major breaking news — from terror attacks to natural disasters. She is known for securing exclusive access and delivering high-impact stories under pressure.
Strategic communications and global reach
Beyond newsroom leadership, Jaffer has expanded into strategic communications and advisory work. As a consultant with a strategic advisory firm, she has worked on media strategy, crisis communications, diaspora outreach, and high-level international coordination in the UK.
Her cross-continental experience — living and working across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States — has shaped her approach to storytelling, identity, and global perception.
Educated at Tufts University in International Relations and holding a Master’s degree in International Journalism from City University London, Jaffer combines editorial depth with policy awareness and media strategy.
A new chapter
With SEN positioning itself as a platform centered on the voices and perspectives of the Global South, Jaffer’s appointment signals an editorial direction rooted in nuance, lived experience, and geopolitical awareness.
Sharjah News and MediaBites have extended their congratulations and best wishes to Jaffer on her new role.
Her message was clear: “If you care about how the South is seen — especially how it sees itself — come see what we’re building.”
