Varun Dhawan personality rights received legal protection after the Delhi High Court passed an important interim order against the misuse of the actor’s identity online. The court directed the removal of AI-generated deepfakes, unauthorized merchandise, and misleading content that used the actor’s name and likeness without permission.
The Delhi High Court observed that some online content included AI-generated images and videos showing Varun Dhawan in inappropriate situations. The court noted that such content could damage his reputation and mislead the public. As a result, immediate protection was granted to safeguard Varun Dhawan personality rights while the case continues.
Justice Jyoti Singh stated that the actor had established a prima facie case and was entitled to interim relief. The court restrained websites, e-commerce platforms, and social media intermediaries from using Dhawan’s name, image, voice, signature, or any other identifiable attribute for commercial or personal gain without authorization.
The court also directed major technology companies, including Google, Meta, and X, to provide basic subscriber information of users allegedly responsible for sharing infringing content. Social media platforms have been instructed to remove newly identified violating content within 36 hours of notification.
According to the lawsuit, Varun Dhawan has trademark registrations for his name and signature. His legal team argued that unauthorized use of these identifiers amounts to infringement and creates confusion among consumers.
