A powerful winter snowstorm sweeping across parts of the United States has caused major disruption to international air travel, forcing Emirates and Etihad Airways to cancel and reschedule several flights between the United Arab Emirates and multiple U.S. cities.
Airlines said the severe weather created unsafe operating conditions at key airports, including heavy snowfall, icy runways, and reduced visibility. As a result, departures from Dubai and Abu Dhabi bound for affected destinations were either delayed before takeoff or turned back after departure, while return flights from the United States also faced lengthy ground holds and cancellations.
In statements issued to passengers, both carriers advised travelers not to proceed to the airport unless they received updated confirmation of their booking. The airlines are offering free rebooking options and, in some cases, travel vouchers for customers impacted by the disruption. Additional staff have been assigned to customer service centers to manage the surge in inquiries.
Airport authorities in the United States temporarily slowed operations as snowplows worked to clear runways and de-icing crews treated aircraft before departure. Aviation experts noted that long-haul routes are particularly vulnerable to weather disruptions because aircraft rotations and crew schedules span multiple continents, causing ripple effects across global networks.
Passengers reported long queues at check-in counters and customer service desks in both the UAE and U.S. airports as they attempted to secure alternative travel plans. Some travelers faced delays of more than 24 hours.
Airlines expect gradual normalization once weather conditions improve, though knock-on delays may continue for several days while aircraft and crew return to their planned positions.
Travelers are advised to monitor airline notifications, check flight status online, and allow extra time for rebooking as operations steadily recover.
