Sharjah’s iconic Central Souq, also known as the Blue Souq for its vibrant facade, is set for a makeover! The Sharjah City Municipality recently announced a renovation plan aimed at preserving this historic landmark while enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, Director General of the Municipality, emphasized their commitment to both safeguarding Sharjah’s rich architectural heritage and improving the amenities within the Souq. This renovation project encompasses various aspects, including architectural and structural repairs, along with a fresh coat of paint for both the interior and exterior.
“We want to ensure the Central Souq continues to thrive for many years to come,” Al Tunaiji said. “This renovation will address any structural issues and modernize essential systems, while staying true to the Souq’s unique design.”
Those familiar with the Souq may have already noticed scaffolding around the upper part of the building, signifying the ongoing work.
Opened in 1978, the Central Souq has become a beloved landmark in Sharjah. Its striking blue-tiled facade and picturesque bridges connecting the two main wings are instantly recognizable. One wing overlooks the Khalid Lagoon and is known for its gold and silver shops, while the other faces King Faisal Street and is a haven for textiles and Persian carpets.
This bustling marketplace, with its diverse offerings spread across approximately 80,000 square meters and 600 shops, is a magnet for both tourists and residents. The unique blend of shops, particularly those specializing in gold, silver, and carpets, attracts visitors worldwide, creating a vibrant cultural hub. The Central Souq’s significance is further cemented by its prominent feature on the UAE’s five-dirham note.
