Heatstroke heroes: Sharjah trains thousands of workers as first Responders

With scorching summer temperatures fast approaching, thousands of workers in the United Arab Emirates are set to gain lifesaving skills.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap), along with other government entities, has launched the “Heat Exhaustion and Disease Prevention Campaign” to empower workers to become first responders for their colleagues.

Starting July 1st, the campaign will see doctors, experts, and government representatives visit worksites and worker accommodations across Sharjah. Their mission? To train a whopping 6,000 workers to identify the signs of heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses, and provide crucial first aid until medical help arrives.

“Workers are often the first ones to see if a colleague is struggling in the heat,” explains Mira Shuhail, head of the special programs division at Mohap’s health promotion department. “This training will equip them with the skills to take action, potentially saving lives.”

The program goes beyond just emergency response. Workers will also receive health screenings to monitor their well-being, including blood pressure and diabetes checks.

But it’s not all about medical checkups. The campaign recognizes the importance of good nutrition in battling the heat. Workers will learn about healthy food choices and receive freebies like fruits, juices, and even personalized meal plans.

“We want to educate workers about the types of food and drinks that can keep them cool and hydrated during the summer,” says Mohammed Al Zarooni, director of Mohap’s Sharjah office. “By understanding how diet plays a role in preventing heat-related illnesses, workers can take charge of their own health.”

The campaign will reach out through social media to ensure a wider impact. With plans to expand based on demand and success, the initiative aims to empower thousands of Sharjah workers to stay safe and healthy throughout the hot summer months.
