UAE Fatwa Council Confirms Hag Al Laila Celebrations Are Permissible on Mid-Shaban Night

The UAE Fatwa Council has confirmed that celebrating Hag Al Laila, a cherished cultural tradition observed on the night of mid-Shaban, is permitted in the United Arab Emirates. The clarification comes as communities across the country prepare to mark the occasion with family-centered and child-friendly activities.

Hag Al Laila, widely celebrated in the UAE and parts of the Gulf, typically sees children wearing traditional attire and visiting neighbors to collect sweets and treats. The practice reflects values of generosity, social cohesion, and joy ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

In its statement, the Fatwa Council emphasized that such customs are allowed as long as they do not contradict Islamic principles. Scholars noted that the celebration is cultural in nature and not considered an act of worship, making it permissible when observed respectfully and without excess. Parents were encouraged to ensure that activities remain safe, modest, and aligned with community values.

Religious experts also highlighted the importance of distinguishing between cultural traditions and religious obligations. While mid-Shaban holds spiritual significance for many Muslims, the council clarified that cultural expressions like Hag Al Laila are acceptable when they promote positive social interaction and do not introduce religious innovations.

Across the UAE, schools, neighborhoods, and cultural institutions are expected to mark the occasion with organized events that reflect the country’s heritage. Authorities have reiterated general guidance on public safety, encouraging families to supervise children and respect local regulations.

The Fatwa Council’s clarification has been welcomed by residents, many of whom view Hag Al Laila as an important tradition that strengthens community bonds and passes cultural values to younger generations. As the night of mid-Shaban approaches, families across the UAE are preparing to celebrate in a spirit of joy, generosity, and togetherness.
