UAE Doctors Warn of Rising Eye Infections Linked to Screen Use, Air Conditioning, and Self-Medication

Doctors across the United Arab Emirates are warning of a noticeable rise in eye infections, attributing the trend to prolonged screen exposure, excessive use of air conditioning, and the growing habit of self-medication without professional advice.

Ophthalmologists say they are seeing more patients with symptoms such as redness, dryness, itching, blurred vision, and recurring eye infections. Extended screen time—driven by remote work, smartphones, and digital entertainment—has significantly reduced blink rates, leading to dry and irritated eyes that are more vulnerable to infection.

Medical professionals also point to air-conditioned indoor environments as a major contributing factor. Constant exposure to AC can dry out the eyes, weakening their natural protective layer. Combined with the UAE’s hot climate, the condition creates an environment where eye discomfort and infections can worsen if left untreated.

Another growing concern is self-medication. Doctors warn that using over-the-counter eye drops or leftover prescriptions without proper diagnosis can mask symptoms, delay treatment, or even aggravate infections. In some cases, inappropriate steroid-based drops have led to complications and prolonged recovery.

Health experts are advising residents to follow preventive measures such as taking regular screen breaks, using lubricating eye drops recommended by professionals, maintaining proper indoor humidity, and avoiding unnecessary eye rubbing. They also stress the importance of seeking medical advice early if symptoms persist.

The warning highlights the broader impact of modern lifestyles on eye health and underscores the need for awareness, responsible screen habits, and timely medical care to prevent long-term damage.
