A Life Changed By An Accident
At 20, Varghese suffered a bike accident that left him paralysed below the chest. He then faced years of hospital treatment, rehabilitation and the challenge of rebuilding his life.
Instead of allowing the accident to define his future, he turned to fitness. Slowly, he regained confidence and began encouraging others to become active.
Today, Varghese is a Guinness World Record holder. He is also the first wheelchair user in the UAE to become accredited as a full personal trainer.
Dubai Fitness Challenge Became A Turning Point
Varghese became an ambassador for the Dubai Fitness Challenge after sharing his fitness journey with others. The initiative, launched in 2017, encourages people of all ages and abilities to exercise.
Its 30×30 challenge asks residents to complete at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day for 30 days.
For People of Determination, the programme includes adapted activities and inclusive events. These include Dubai Run, Dubai Ride and Dubai Yoga.
For Varghese, the Dubai Fitness Challenge helped him understand what his body could achieve. The 2022 Dubai Run was especially important.
He had never wheeled 5 to 10 kilometres alone before. However, completing the challenge gave him confidence before attempting his Guinness World Record.
Guinness World Record In Dubai
In March 2023, Varghese achieved a major milestone. He set the Guinness World Record for the Largest GPS Drawing by an Individual.
He travelled 8.71 kilometres in his wheelchair through areas around Burj Khalifa and DIFC. His route created the shape of a wheelchair.
Dubai Police supported the attempt with an ambulance, drones and traffic patrols. Varghese said the record represented more than a personal achievement. He wanted to show that People of Determination are strong, visible and capable.
An Inspiration For People Of Determination
Sujith Varghese inspires Dubai and people around the world by showing that a major setback does not have to decide someone’s future.
He credits Dubai’s accessibility and opportunities for helping him rebuild his life. As the Dubai Fitness Challenge prepares for its 10th edition, his journey remains a powerful example of determination, inclusion and accessible sport.
The 2026 challenge will run from October 31 to November 29, encouraging residents and visitors to stay active for 30 days.
