Sharjah’s AED 500 million Mid-Line Drainage Project has reached 70% completion, strengthening rainwater infrastructure, reducing flood risks, improving traffic safety, and supporting sustainable urban growth across the emirate.

SHARJAH: Sharjah’s flagship Mid-Line Drainage Project has reached 70% completion, marking a major milestone in the emirate’s efforts to strengthen its rainwater management system and provide a long-term solution to water pooling in key residential and commercial areas.
The AED 500 million infrastructure project is among the largest drainage initiatives undertaken in Sharjah. Extending across densely populated districts, the network is designed to improve the drainage of rainwater and groundwater, helping prevent water accumulation on roads, in tunnels, and across residential neighborhoods.
According to the Sharjah Public Works Department, the project will channel excess water into the sea while linking existing drainage networks to maximize efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of standing water.
Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Sharjah Public Works Department, said the project reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to develop world-class infrastructure that keeps pace with the emirate’s rapid urban expansion and population growth.
He described the Mid-Line Drainage Project as a strategic investment that will significantly enhance Sharjah’s capacity to manage increasingly intense rainfall events associated with climate change.
Al Suwaidi also credited the continued support and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and the close follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council, for ensuring the project is delivered to the highest standards of planning, sustainability and public service.
He said the project represents a shift from temporary flood-response measures to a permanent engineering solution that can protect vital infrastructure and improve public safety during heavy rainfall.
Once completed, the drainage network is expected to improve traffic flow during storms, reduce congestion and accident risks, lower groundwater levels that can threaten building foundations, and decrease government spending on emergency maintenance and flood response.
The project is also intended to strengthen Sharjah’s resilience to climate change by creating infrastructure capable of handling larger volumes of rainwater while supporting sustainable urban development.
Residents have welcomed the progress, describing the project as a significant investment in the emirate’s future. Many said it addresses long-standing concerns about rainwater accumulation in some areas in recent years and will improve both infrastructure efficiency and the quality of public services.
They also noted that the upgraded drainage system is expected to benefit businesses and communities alike by improving mobility, protecting public assets, supporting economic activity, and enhancing the overall quality of life across Sharjah.
The Mid-Line Drainage Project is part of Sharjah’s broader strategy to build resilient infrastructure that supports sustainable growth and prepares the emirate for future climate challenges.
