Global K-pop phenomenon BTS has announced that it will not submit its music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, marking a significant shift in its relationship with one of the music industry’s most prestigious honors. The decision follows the Recording Academy’s introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, which has sparked widespread debate among artists, fans and critics.

In a statement shared through the Instagram Stories of all seven members, BTS said the group believes music should be appreciated without being divided by language or geography.

“We have decided not to submit our music to the Grammys this year. We hope music can be heard and loved as music itself, rather than being divided by region or language,” the statement read.

Debate Over the New Asian Pop Category

The newly introduced Grammy category has generated mixed reactions across the global music industry. While some see it as a positive step toward recognizing Asian artists, others argue that creating region-specific awards could unintentionally separate international musicians from mainstream categories instead of promoting equal recognition.

BTS’ decision has brought fresh attention to the ongoing discussion about how global artists should be represented at major international award ceremonies.

A Long Journey with the Grammys

For BTS, the Grammys have represented an important milestone throughout their career. Since receiving their first nomination, the group has earned multiple nominations and delivered memorable performances despite never winning an award.

One of their most remarkable appearances came at the 2022 Grammy Awards, when several members faced injuries and health challenges before taking the stage. Jin was recovering from finger surgery, while Jimin, J-Hope and Jungkook battled COVID-19 and other health issues. Despite limited rehearsal time, the group performed Butter with precision and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Although BTS left the ceremony without a Grammy, the members later thanked their fans, saying they had no regrets because they gave their best performance.

Success Beyond Awards

Following their Grammy appearances, BTS entered a new phase of their careers by focusing on solo projects before completing their mandatory military service. During that period, the members continued breaking records through chart-topping albums, successful solo releases and global streaming milestones.

After reuniting, BTS once again demonstrated their worldwide popularity through sold-out concerts and record-breaking tours, proving that their influence extends far beyond award ceremonies.

Music Above Labels

With this latest decision, BTS appears to be shifting the conversation away from trophies and toward artistic recognition. The group believes music should connect people regardless of language, nationality or cultural background.

Their announcement has reignited global discussions about diversity, inclusion and the future of international music awards, with many fans praising the group’s stance on treating music as a universal art form rather than categorizing it by region.

A Legacy Beyond the Grammys

BTS’ decision not to participate in the 2026 Grammy Awards signals that the group’s legacy is no longer defined by industry accolades alone. Instead, the band continues to focus on creating music that resonates with audiences worldwide while advocating for equal recognition of artists regardless of where they come from.

As conversations surrounding the new Grammy category continue, BTS’ decision is expected to remain a defining moment in the ongoing debate about representation, inclusivity and the future of global music awards.
