Court Grants Interim Relief to Salman Khan
The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim relief to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan by directing the makers of the upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy to remove its teaser, promotional videos, posters, and related online content.
The order came after Khan approached the court, arguing that the film’s promotional material unlawfully used elements associated with his identity and could harm his reputation while legal proceedings connected to the subject remain pending.
Actor Objects to Promotional Material
According to Salman Khan’s legal team, the teaser and promotional campaign contained several visual references that audiences could directly associate with the actor.
These reportedly included a character resembling Salman Khan, his iconic blue bracelet, and promotional imagery that allegedly created the impression that the film was connected to him. His lawyers argued that such references violated his personality rights and could mislead the public.
Court Highlights Importance of Reputation
During the hearing, Justice Jyoti Singh made significant observations about protecting an individual’s reputation.
The court noted that reputation, once damaged, cannot easily be restored and expressed concern over the alleged commercial use of a person’s identity without consent. As an interim measure, the court directed the producers to remove the teaser and all disputed promotional content from online platforms while the matter remains under judicial review.
Interviews and Online Content Also Targeted
The High Court also reportedly instructed the filmmakers to remove interviews and other promotional material linked to the disputed content.
The court further indicated that if the producers failed to comply with its directions, digital platforms such as YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) could also be instructed to take down the content.
Filmmakers Deny Direct Connection
The producers of Kala Hiran defended the project during the proceedings, maintaining that the film is entirely fictional.
They denied any intention to portray Salman Khan and argued that any similarities noticed by viewers were purely coincidental. Despite this defense, the High Court ruled that the promotional material should remain offline until the legal issues are examined in greater detail.
