Preity Zinta returned to the big screen after several years with Batwara 1947. The period drama is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It was released in theatres on August 14, 2026, during the Independence Day weekend.
The film features a strong cast, including Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and Abhimanyu Singh. Despite its cast and important subject, the movie received mixed-to-decent reviews. It also struggled to create a major impact at the box office.
Speaking exclusively to Mid-Day, Preity Zinta discussed the film’s performance. She explained that she always gives her full effort while working on a project. However, she believes the final result is beyond an actor’s control.

Batwara 1947 is set in Lahore during the Partition of British India. The story is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
Sunny Deol plays the head of a Muslim refugee family that moves to Lahore after Partition. The family is given a haveli, but they discover that an elderly Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, still lives there.
The story focuses on humanity, empathy and resilience during a difficult period in history.
