Oman will launch autonomous self-driving electric vehicles at its airports in 2027, following successful operational trials at Salalah Airport, witnessed by Transport Minister Said bin Hamoud al Maawali.

Salalah Airport has successfully completed operational trials of self-driving autonomous electric vehicles, witnessed by Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, alongside senior officials from Oman Airports.
Following the trials’ success, autonomous vehicles will be formally launched for airport operations in 2027, making Oman one of the GCC’s leading adopters of self-driving technology in aviation infrastructure.

The autonomous electric vehicles are designed to achieve four specific operational objectives that address the core challenges of modern airport management.
Enhanced delivery efficiency through automated, precise logistics operations that remove human error and delay from internal airport processes. Improved service speed and reliability through vehicles that operate on consistent, programmable schedules independent of human workforce constraints. Reduced operating costs and emissions through electric propulsion combined with optimized autonomous routing that minimizes energy consumption. Strengthened positioning of Oman as a regional test environment for smart and sustainable transport technologies — an ambition that extends well beyond airports into Oman’s broader economic diversification strategy.

Oman Airports said the initiative reflects its commitment to adopting smart and sustainable mobility solutions and exploring modern technologies and their potential applications across the airport environment.
The successful Salalah trials place Oman at the forefront of GCC autonomous vehicle deployment in public infrastructure — ahead of many regional peers in translating smart transport ambition into operational reality.
