Veteran Indian actor Pradeep Rawat, widely recognized for portraying some of Indian cinema’s most memorable villains, passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74 following a battle with blood cancer. The actor breathed his last at a hospital in Mumbai after undergoing treatment for several weeks.
Rawat’s death has left the Indian film fraternity and his admirers in mourning, with colleagues and fans paying tribute to an actor whose powerful screen presence spanned more than three decades across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil cinema.
Battled Cancer in Final Weeks
According to his manager Siddharth R. Tiwari, Rawat had been receiving treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai for nearly a month before being shifted to a specialized cancer hospital in Bhiwandi.
Despite medical efforts, the veteran actor succumbed to the illness on Tuesday evening. He is survived by his wife Kalyani Rawat and their son Vikramaditya Rawat.
A Career Defined by Powerful Performances
Pradeep Rawat carved a unique place in Indian cinema with his commanding performances, particularly in negative and character roles. His ability to portray intense and intimidating characters made him one of the industry’s most sought-after actors.
He gained nationwide recognition for playing the ruthless Ghajini Dharmatma in the blockbuster film Ghajini, starring Aamir Khan. The performance remains one of the defining roles of his career and cemented his reputation as one of Bollywood’s most memorable antagonists.
Apart from Ghajini, Rawat delivered notable performances in acclaimed films including Sarfarosh, Lagaan, and Chhaava. He also enjoyed tremendous success in Telugu cinema through films such as Sye and Naayak, where his villainous roles earned widespread appreciation.
Earlier in his career, Rawat portrayed Ashwatthama in the iconic television series Mahabharat, introducing him to audiences across the country.

Soon after news of his passing emerged, actors, filmmakers and fans expressed their grief on social media.
Actor Yashpal Sharma, who shared screen space with Rawat in Lagaan, paid tribute by remembering him as the unforgettable “Ghajini Deva of Lagaan” and offered his condolences.
Actor Gajendra Chauhan also mourned the loss, recalling Rawat’s portrayal of Ashwatthama in Mahabharat and describing him as a respected colleague and friend.
Fans across India praised his dedication to acting and remembered his ability to leave a lasting impression, regardless of the size of his role.
A Lasting Legacy
Over the course of his career, Pradeep Rawat appeared in dozens of films across multiple languages, becoming one of Indian cinema’s most recognized character actors. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between historical dramas, action films and television, earning admiration from audiences and fellow artists alike.
His final screen appearance came in Vicky Kaushal’s historical drama Chhaava, where he portrayed Yesaji Kank, adding another memorable performance to his long list of credits.
