Meta Disables Nearly 7 Million WhatsApp Accounts in Scam Crackdown

Meta announced on Tuesday that it disabled nearly 7 million WhatsApp accounts tied to scams in the first half of 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat fraud on the platform.

The company said it proactively removed 6.8 million accounts, many originating from Southeast Asia, before they could be exploited by criminal networks.

“Our team identified and blocked these accounts before they could be used by the organizations that created them,” said Clair Deevy, WhatsApp’s Director of External Affairs.
