PR and marketing leader Alisa shares how growing up in the UAE’s multicultural society shaped her identity, career and belief that culture, heritage and human connections unite communities.
Sharjah News – Imran Malik
After years of telling the stories of brands, entrepreneurs, and inspiring individuals, I find myself reflecting on a small but meaningful part of my own story, one shaped by heritage, culture, and the incredible experience of growing up in the UAE. The UAE has always been more than a place of residence; it has been home, a place where cultures meet, ideas connect, and communities come together.
With more than 200 nationalities calling the UAE home and expatriates making up nearly 90% of the population, representing communities from across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, the country stands as a remarkable example of how diversity can create understanding, innovation, and shared experiences. Growing up in this multicultural environment gave me an appreciation for different traditions, languages, and perspectives from an early age.
My classrooms, neighbourhoods, and professional circles were always a reflection of the world where friendships were formed across nationalities, traditions were exchanged, and differences became opportunities to learn. One of the most beautiful aspects of Dubai’s multicultural society is how traditions are shared and celebrated.
From Eid, Diwali, Christmas, UAE National Day, and cultural festivals from around the world, the UAE creates an environment where people are encouraged to experience and appreciate each other’s heritage. The UAE’s multicultural spirit extends beyond its residents.
Dubai’s position as one of the world’s leading tourism and business destinations brings people from every continent together. Dubai welcomed around 19 million international overnight visitors in 2025, marking a record year for tourism and reflecting its position as a truly global city. The UAE also hosts thousands of cultural, entertainment, business, and international events annually, creating opportunities for communities to connect, collaborate, and celebrate diversity.
This understanding of people, cultures, and stories became the foundation of my professional journey in public relations, marketing, and communications. As the Founder and PR & Marketing Consultant at ALISA PR, I have spent over 20 years building brands, creating meaningful narratives, and helping organisations connect with their audiences across the MENA region.
For me, PR has always been about more than communication. It is about people, understanding cultures, finding common ground, and creating authentic stories that bring communities closer together. Working across diverse industries and with people from different backgrounds has given me a truly global outlook and a deeper appreciation for what makes every culture unique.
My own identity is a reflection of this global perspective, rooted in Indian heritage, Portuguese ancestry through my D’Souza family name, and shaped by decades of experiences in the UAE’s diverse society. Dubai is not just a city where people from different countries live side by side; it is a place where cultures actively interact. It has become a bridge connecting East and West, creating opportunities for collaboration, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The UAE has shown me that culture is not something that separates us; it is something that connects us. Traditions, stories, and personal journeys become even more meaningful when they are shared with others. Being part of this extraordinary multicultural landscape continues to inspire me both personally and professionally. Every culture brings a story, every tradition carries meaning, and every connection has the power to create a stronger, more understanding world.
