Flying taxis near takeoff as the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) speeds up certification for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The move gives a major boost to air taxi developers and brings futuristic city travel closer to reality.
The FAA has created special rules covering pilot training, safety, and operations for eVTOLs. This means air taxis could soon use the same flight corridors as helicopters. Companies such as Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Wisk Aero, and Beta Technologies are now preparing to launch trial flights under these new rules.
The progress matters because without regulatory clarity, these firms would remain stuck at the prototype stage. Now, with certification rules in place, early operations in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, and Miami are possible before full commercial approval. Full certification is expected between 2026 and 2027, but demonstration flights may happen as early as next year.
Beyond the US, the FAA is working with regulators in Europe and Asia to create common safety standards. This will make it easier for flying taxis near takeoff in global markets too.
Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation have already joined the White House eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. This allows them to show their aircraft can safely operate in real-world conditions before wide rollout. Backed by Toyota, Joby is also ramping up production facilities in California and Ohio.
For passengers, the promise is exciting — a 90-minute drive could be replaced by a 10-minute hop in the air. Infrastructure and public trust still need work, but experts say the US is leading the way in this transport revolution.
