Twenty years after Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna reached cinemas, filmmaker Karan Johar has opened up about the intense reaction that followed the film’s release. The Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan-starrer, which explored marital dissatisfaction and extramarital relationships, remains one of Johar’s most debated films.
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Johar recalled how strongly some viewers reacted to the story — including one particularly uncomfortable encounter that left him worried that an audience member might physically confront him.
Karan Johar feared an angry viewer might hit him
According to Johar’s recollection, the incident happened after a paid preview screening of the 2006 film. The filmmaker remembered encountering a woman who was extremely angry about what she had watched.
Her reaction was not simply criticism of the movie. Johar recalled that she confronted him directly and expressed her disapproval in extremely strong terms. The filmmaker has now described the experience as one of the moments when he realized just how personally audiences had taken the film’s subject matter.
The reaction was understandable in the context of the film’s story. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna placed infidelity at the center of a mainstream Bollywood relationship drama, following Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan) and Maya Talwar (Rani Mukerji), two married people who develop a relationship outside their respective marriages.
Why was the film so controversial?
When Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna released in August 2006, its treatment of marriage and infidelity was considerably more provocative for a mainstream Hindi-language film.
Dev is married to Rhea, played by Preity Zinta, while Maya is married to Rishi, played by Abhishek Bachchan. Both marriages are troubled, and Dev and Maya gradually become emotionally involved before beginning an affair.
Rather than presenting marriage as something that must automatically survive regardless of circumstances, Johar’s film questioned whether remaining in an unhappy relationship was always the right choice.
That approach divided audiences. Some viewers considered the characters selfish and morally difficult to sympathize with, while others viewed the film as an attempt to portray complicated relationships rather than straightforward heroes and villains. Contemporary critical reactions also reflected this divide. Rotten Tomatoes’ record of reviews includes criticism of the film’s lengthy runtime and uneven execution, while other reviews acknowledged its ambition and performances.
Johar now admits the film was “over-bloated”
Interestingly, Johar’s current reflection is not simply a defence of the movie.
As the film turns 20, the filmmaker has acknowledged that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna had problems, particularly its scale and length. He has described the film as “over-bloated”, pointing to elements such as its excessive runtime and songs that he now feels were not necessarily needed.
However, Johar continues to stand behind the emotional core of the story. His retrospective comments suggest that while he recognizes the film’s flaws, he still believes the central exploration of complicated relationships was sincere.
From controversial release to cult following
The reception to Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has changed considerably over the years.
The film’s original theatrical response was mixed, but its themes have continued to generate discussion. With changing attitudes toward relationships, marriage and personal fulfilment, portions of the film have been reassessed by younger audiences.
Johar himself previously described the movie as an important creative decision in his career. On its 18th anniversary in 2024, he called making the film one of the best decisions of his career and said it gave him the confidence to tell stories about relationships that were “messy but beautiful.”
Today, the film is frequently discussed not only for its controversial subject matter but also for its performances, music, New York setting and unusually complex portrayal of relationships for a major Bollywood production.
A film that remains divisive after two decades
Twenty years later, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has clearly outlived its original controversy. The movie may still divide viewers over whether its characters’ decisions were justified, but its ability to provoke debate remains part of its legacy.
Karan Johar’s latest recollections offer a glimpse into just how powerful that reaction was at the time. What once made him fear confronting an angry viewer has now become part of the story behind a film that continues to generate discussion two decades after its release.
