Historic Recognition for Fujairah

Wadi Wurayah National Park has made history by becoming the UAE’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landmark recognition came during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

The inscription also makes Wadi Wurayah the country’s third UNESCO World Heritage property, highlighting its outstanding ecological and geological importance on the global stage.

UNESCO approved the UAE’s nomination after determining that the park possesses Outstanding Universal Value, recognizing its exceptional biodiversity, unique geology, and one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most important freshwater ecosystems.

A Landmark for Conservation

The UNESCO designation marks a major milestone in the UAE’s environmental conservation efforts.

It reflects years of work to protect the country’s natural heritage while meeting internationally recognized conservation standards.

A UAE delegation led by the Ministry of Culture and the Government of Fujairah attended the World Heritage Committee meeting to witness the historic decision, reinforcing the country’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures for future generations.

Why Wadi Wurayah Is Unique

Located in the Hajar Mountains overlooking the Gulf of Oman, Wadi Wurayah National Park is one of the UAE’s most remarkable natural landscapes.

The reserve is famous for its rugged mountains, deep valleys, waterfalls, and year-round freshwater springs—an uncommon feature in the region.

Its freshwater ecosystem supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife. Scientists have documented more than 1,099 species, including 883 animal species and 216 plant species.

The park also provides habitat for 10 globally threatened species and nearly half of the UAE’s terrestrial mammal and reptile species. Rare animals such as the Arabian tahr and the caracal continue to thrive within the protected reserve.

A Geological Wonder

Wadi Wurayah is valued not only for its wildlife but also for its remarkable geological heritage.

The park contains one of the world’s largest and best-preserved ophiolite rock formations, offering scientists a rare glimpse into the Earth’s ancient oceanic crust and upper mantle.

This unique combination of geological significance and rich biodiversity played a decisive role in securing UNESCO World Heritage status.

What UNESCO Status Means

UNESCO recognition confirms that Wadi Wurayah has Outstanding Universal Value, making it important not only to the UAE but to humanity as a whole.

The designation strengthens international conservation efforts, encourages scientific research, promotes sustainable tourism, and ensures the park is managed according to globally recognized protection standards.

It is also expected to raise Wadi Wurayah’s international profile, attracting researchers, nature enthusiasts, and eco-tourists while encouraging responsible travel that protects its fragile ecosystems.

Strengthening the UAE’s UNESCO Legacy

With Wadi Wurayah’s inscription, the UAE now has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Cultural Sites of Al Ain
  • Faya Palaeolandscape in Sharjah
  • Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah

The growing list reflects the UAE’s commitment to preserving both its cultural heritage and natural landscapes.

A Lasting Global Achievement

Wadi Wurayah’s UNESCO inscription is more than an international honor—it is a recognition of one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most extraordinary natural environments.

The designation is expected to strengthen conservation efforts, expand scientific research, increase global awareness, and support sustainable tourism.

As the UAE’s first UNESCO-listed natural World Heritage Site, Wadi Wurayah now stands as a lasting symbol of the nation’s dedication to protecting its unique ecosystems for generations to come.
