The UAE govt has officially announced reduced working hours for both public and private sector employees during Ramadan 2026, as authorities aim to help workers balance professional responsibilities with religious observance and family life during the holy month.
Under the latest guidelines, private sector employees across the UAE will see their daily working hours shortened by two hours throughout Ramadan, in accordance with labour regulations that recognise the physical and spiritual demands of fasting. Employers are also encouraged to implement flexible working arrangements or remote work options where operationally feasible to support employee well-being.
For federal government employees and staff within ministries, official hours have been set from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, with Friday hours running from 9:00 a.m. to noon, except where specific job requirements dictate otherwise. Authorities have also authorised up to 70 per cent remote work on Fridays for eligible federal entities, reflecting continued flexibility in work arrangements during Ramadan.
Officials highlighted that the changes are in line with longstanding labour practices in the Emirates, which aim to accommodate the spiritual needs of all residents including both Muslim and non-Muslim employees while maintaining workplace productivity. Adjusted schedules are expected to smooth daily routines and enable workers to observe fasting, attend prayers and spend time with family during this significant period.
Local businesses and organisations are preparing to adapt to the shortened hours, while communities across the UAE gear up for Ramadan activities and cultural traditions. As the holy month approaches, workers and employers alike are encouraged to plan ahead for the changes and make the most of the flexibility offered.
