Wegovy weight loss pill approval in the US is a major step in obesity treatment. But patients in the UAE will likely have to wait longer. Novo Nordisk has confirmed that the pill is not yet approved for use in the UAE.
The US Food and Drug Administration has cleared a once-daily oral version of Wegovy. Until now, the drug was available only as a weekly injection. The pill is designed for adults with obesity, or those who are overweight with related health conditions. It must be used with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
Clinical trial data from Novo Nordisk’s Oasis 4 study showed strong results. Patients taking a 25 mg daily pill lost an average of 13.6 per cent of their body weight over 64 weeks. This equals roughly 15 kg for many users. The drug is also approved in the US to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients.
Despite the excitement, the Wegovy weight loss pill is still pending approval in the UAE. Novo Nordisk is waiting for clearance from the European Medicines Agency. After that, the product must be reviewed by UAE authorities such as MOHAP or DHA. This process can take several months or longer.
Doctors and pharmacists in the UAE expect high demand once approval is granted. The pill format is seen as more convenient, especially for people who dislike injections. However, it will remain prescription-only, with strict checks by licensed pharmacies.
Pricing in the UAE has not been announced. Experts say insurance coverage for weight-loss drugs is limited, so many patients may need to pay out of pocket.
Doctors also warn that GLP-1 drugs are not for cosmetic use. The Wegovy weight loss pill is meant for medical weight management, alongside long-term lifestyle changes.
