Sharjah Ruler Inaugurates Independence Square Project

Sharjah Independence Square project

The Sharjah Independence Square project was officially inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The ceremony marked the completion of major development works, including the construction of the Independence Monument and improvements to the surrounding area. The project also celebrates the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad and the anniversary of national independence on 2 December 1971.

His Highness unveiled the new 34-metre-high monument at the centre of the square. It features a seven-pointed star representing the seven emirates. The monument also displays key historical facts related to the UAE’s independence and the early agreements between the Emirates and Britain.

During the tour, His Highness viewed the upgraded fountains, landscaping, walking paths and lighting system. These improvements give the area a modern look while keeping its cultural value. The redevelopment of surrounding buildings included new façades and the replacement of 95 shop signs to create a unified and attractive urban identity.

The Sharjah Independence Square project reflects the Ruler’s vision to improve public spaces and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. The project strengthens Sharjah’s urban beauty and supports its long-term development plans.

Infrastructure upgrades included new roads, pavements and parking areas to improve traffic flow and safety. All lighting poles around the square were replaced.

His Highness also inaugurated the restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque nearby. The mosque, first built in 1995, has been renovated in the Fatimid style with taller minarets, an external arcade and upgraded facilities.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials and reflects Sharjah’s ongoing commitment to preserving heritage, improving public services and supporting community needs.
