Three Austrian nuns return convent after leaving a care home. Sister Bernadette, 88, Sister Regina, 86, and Sister Rita, 82, were moved from their longtime home at Kloster Goldenstein in Elsbethen, near Salzburg, in December 2023. They were unhappy at the care home and decided to move back in September with the help of former students and a locksmith.
The Austrian nuns return convent under certain rules. Church authorities said they can stay but must stop posting on social media. They also must secure the enclosed parts of the convent and ensure no outsiders enter. In return, they will receive medical care and spiritual support from a priest.
The nuns are not fully satisfied with the Church’s offer. They described it as a “gagging contract” that limits their rights. Their social media posts have gained almost 100,000 Instagram followers. Supporters have helped them with food, electricity, and keeping their videos online.
Sister Bernadette has lived at the convent for decades and attended the school as a teenager. Sister Regina joined in 1958 and later became headmistress, while Sister Rita joined in 1962. The convent has a long history as a private school and convent, still operating today.
Provost Markus Grasl, the nuns’ superior, had asked them to return to the care home. Supporters and the sisters refused. Now, a spokesman for the Provost said the nuns can remain at Kloster Goldenstein “until further notice,” but only if they agree to Church conditions.
