Cristiano Ronaldo Set to Avoid Ban at World Cup After FIFA Red-Card Verdict Offers Probation

Ronaldo World Cup ban

Ronaldo World Cup ban concerns eased on Tuesday after FIFA announced its disciplinary decision on Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent red card. The verdict means the Portugal star will not miss any World Cup 2026 matches despite being sent off for elbowing an Ireland player during a qualifier earlier this month.

FIFA confirmed a three-game suspension but placed two matches on a one-year probation. Ronaldo already served the first mandatory game ban when Portugal defeated Armenia 9-1 in their final qualifier. This outcome reduces the impact of the Ronaldo World Cup ban situation, allowing him to start his record sixth World Cup without sitting out.

FIFA explained that its rules allow part of a suspension to be deferred, though this level of leniency is rare. In recent cases involving players from Armenia and Burundi, full three-match bans were enforced without probation. FIFA warned that if Ronaldo commits a similar act during the probation period, the remaining games will be activated.

Portugal will play friendly matches in March, followed by warm-up games in late May or June. The World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins on June 11. Ronaldo’s return is important for Portugal, one of the top-seeded teams in the tournament.

The verdict came shortly after Ronaldo attended a formal White House dinner with U.S. President Donald Trump, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Ronaldo has been playing in the Saudi league for three years and remains one of football’s biggest global stars.

FIFA said the ruling can be appealed, though it remains unclear who has the authority to do so. Portugal will learn their group opponents at the World Cup draw on December 5.
