Sharjah International Book Fair turning points in Arabic poetry were explored in a thought-provoking dialogue session during the 44th edition of the event. Researchers and critics discussed how Arabic poetry has reflected the transformation of human thought and culture throughout history.
During the session titled “On the Edge of Weight… Major Turning Points in the Course of Arabic Poetry,” speakers explained how poetry evolved from oral traditions to written forms. The discussion emphasized that poetry is not only about rhythm and meter but also a mirror of human experience. The session took place in the presence of poets, critics, and literature enthusiasts.
Researcher Abdul Hadi Saleh Al-Shehri reviewed the journey of Arabic poetry from the pre-Islamic era to modern times. He explained that early poets created rhythm naturally, long before Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi developed the science of prosody. Al-Shehri also highlighted the role of poets like Abu Al-Atahiyah, who challenged traditional poetic forms and sought more creative freedom.
The session also touched on the Sharjah International Book Fair turning points in modern Arabic poetry. Al-Shehri discussed the renaissance movements of the 19th and 20th centuries and mentioned the influence of the Diwan, Mahjar, and Apollo schools. He noted that free verse poets like Nazik Al-Malaika and Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab revolutionized poetic rhythm to match modern life’s pace.
These discussions at the Sharjah International Book Fair showcased how Arabic poetry continues to evolve as a powerful art form that connects rhythm, thought, and emotion.
