The early start marks the earliest-ever launch of the annual shopping frenzy.
The shift comes as China’s economy struggles with slow retail growth, rising youth unemployment, and a troubled property market. Despite government stimulus efforts, consumer confidence remains low. Retailers are extending the sale period to spread out demand and encourage more spending over time.
Originally launched by Alibaba in 2009, Singles’ Day quickly became China’s version of Black Friday. It generated billions in sales and drew global attention for its scale and innovation. But with today’s economic challenges, companies are experimenting with longer campaigns and deeper discounts to keep the excitement alive.
Alibaba confirmed that its “11.11 Global Shopping Festival” officially began on October 15. The company is also using AI tools on Taobao and Tmall to personalize recommendations and enhance customer engagement.
The timing of the sale also follows China’s Golden Week, a period known for high consumer activity. Analysts say this year’s early rollout reflects a changing retail landscape—where big discounts alone may not be enough to spark the same shopping boom that once defined 11.11.
