Hoor Al-Qasimi Makes History as First Foreign Artistic Director at Japan’s Aichi Triennale 2025, Elevating Sharjah’s Global Cultural Legacy

Hoor Al-Qasimi Aichi Triennale 2025

Sharjah’s artistic vision reached another historic milestone as a delegation from the emirate attended the opening of the Aichi Triennale 2025 in Japan — a landmark event led by Hoor Al-Qasimi, who made history as the first foreign Artistic Director of Japan’s leading contemporary art festival.

Under Al-Qasimi’s direction, the Triennale’s theme, “A Time Between Ashes and Roses,” takes inspiration from the celebrated Arab poet Adonis, inviting audiences to reflect on the delicate space between devastation and renewal — and the possibilities that emerge in between.

Over the next 79 days, Aichi will transform into a global hub of creativity, hosting 62 artists from 22 countries across museums, ceramics towns, and public spaces. The event explores the evolving relationship between humanity and the environment — urging collaboration, empathy, and coexistence.

The Sharjah delegation’s presence reinforces the emirate’s role as a global arts leader, known for its Sharjah Biennial and its commitment to amplifying voices from the Global South. As visitors wander through installations like Mulyana’s knitted coral reefs and the ceramic art of Seto, the spirit of Sharjah’s artistic philosophy — bridging memory, culture, and imagination — resonates profoundly.

“This is cultural diplomacy at its finest,” remarked one attendee, “a proud moment not just for Sharjah and the UAE, but for the entire Arab world.”

Hoor Al-Qasimi’s curatorial leadership once again demonstrates how art can transcend borders, transforming dialogue into understanding — and creativity into connection.
