The Sharjah Library 100 Years celebration marks a century of learning, growth, and culture. The journey of Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) began in 1925 when Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, founded the first library inside Sharjah Fort. It was then known as Al Qasimia Library. From those early days, the library became a symbol of Sharjah’s deep commitment to knowledge and culture.
Early beginnings in Sharjah Fort
In 1951, the library came under the care of Sheikh Saqr bin Sultan Al Qasimi. It remained in the fort until 1956, when it moved to the Al Mudheef building in the courtyard. Later, under Sheikh Khalid bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the library continued to develop.
Expansion under leadership
The growth of SPL reached new heights when His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi took over. Key milestones included moving to Africa Hall in 1980, rebranding as Sharjah Public Libraries in 1987, and then relocating to University City in 1998. In 2011, its modern headquarters opened at Cultural Square.
Six branches today
Today, the network has six branches, including Khorfakkan and Cultural Square. Each branch reflects the transformation from a small fort library into a modern cultural landmark.
Year-long centennial events
For the Sharjah Library 100 Years programme in 2025, SPL has planned workshops on document restoration, poetry evenings, and Arabic calligraphy sessions. Events on literature, identity, and sustainability are also part of the celebrations.
From fort origins to a vibrant network of libraries, SPL continues to stand as a cultural beacon for Sharjah.
