Pakistan: Police crackdown on anti-KFC Gaza protests

Pakistani police have arrested around 160 people after violent protests targeted KFC outlets across the country. These demonstrations stem from public outrage over the ongoing war in Gaza. Protesters have linked KFC to U.S. support for Israel, sparking a nationwide backlash.

According to the government, at least 20 separate attacks took place on KFC restaurants. One employee was shot and killed during the violence. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday at a KFC branch near Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.

Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry addressed the media on Saturday. He stated, “KFC is under attack. Twenty incidents have occurred. One staff member has tragically lost his life.”

Although an investigation is underway, police have yet to confirm the motive behind the fatal shooting. It remains unclear whether the attack was directly linked to the protests.

Since the war in Gaza began, Islamist parties in Pakistan have called for boycotts of U.S.-based brands. As a result, KFC has become a frequent target. Protesters have smashed windows, set fires, and threatened staff at various locations this month.

In response to the unrest, authorities arrested 145 individuals in Punjab and 15 in Islamabad. The government has vowed to take strict action against those inciting violence.

“These restaurants hire Pakistani staff, buy local goods, and keep profits within Pakistan,” said Chaudhry. He urged citizens to avoid attacking businesses that support the local economy.

Notably, this is not the first time KFC has faced backlash in Pakistan. In March last year, protesters chanting “Free Palestine” set fire to a KFC outlet in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The situation remains tense, as protests continue in several cities. Authorities are increasing security around fast food outlets to prevent further violence.
