Trump confident of reaching ‘very good’ trade deal with China

President Donald Trump on Thursday voiced strong confidence about securing a trade agreement with China. However, he did not share any timeline or offer details about the potential negotiations. Speaking at the White House, Trump responded to a reporter’s question about reaching out to Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said, “Oh, we’re going to make a deal. I think we are going to make a very good deal with China.”

Despite this optimistic tone, formal talks between the two nations remain on hold. There is still no indication of when or how discussions might resume. Earlier in the day, China’s commerce ministry urged the United States to stop placing “extreme pressure” on the Chinese economy. The ministry also stressed the need for mutual respect and equality in any future trade dialogue.

Even so, both countries remain stuck in a stalemate. Neither side has taken the first step toward restarting formal negotiations. Meanwhile, President Trump has eased some tariffs on other trade partners. However, his administration continues to enforce high import duties on Chinese goods.

Currently, the total U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports amount to a staggering 145 percent. These tariffs have triggered global concern, affecting supply chains and shaking business confidence. As a result, many industries are feeling the pressure, and international markets remain volatile.

Although Trump’s comments suggest he is open to progress, major disagreements between the two sides still exist. Analysts believe resolving these issues will require more than public optimism. On the other hand, Beijing continues to call for a balanced and respectful approach. Yet Washington has shown little sign of shifting its stance.

As both sides hold their positions, the global economy remains on edge. A breakthrough may come eventually, but for now, the uncertainty continues to cloud U.S.-China trade relations.
