Latham out of Pakistan ODIs, Bracewell leads New Zealand

New Zealand

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan due to a hand injury. As a result, Michael Bracewell will continue as captain.

Since Mitchell Santner is playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Bracewell recently led New Zealand to a 4-1 T20I series win.

Latham was set to captain the team in the three-match ODI series starting Saturday in Napier. However, he fractured his hand while batting in the nets. According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), he will need at least four weeks to recover.

Meanwhile, opener Will Young will miss the last two ODIs. He will be with his wife as they await their first child.

Expressing disappointment, head coach Gary Stead said, “Losing Tom as captain just before the series is unfortunate. We wish him a quick recovery. Fortunately, Michael has already done a great job in the T20I series.”

To fill Latham’s spot, Henry Nicholls has returned from a calf strain. Mitch Hay will take on wicketkeeping duties. Additionally, Canterbury batsman Rhys Mariu has earned his first call-up as batting cover.

Stead acknowledged the challenges. “We’ve had to stay flexible with so many players unavailable. However, this opens doors for others. It’s exciting to introduce Rhys and welcome Henry back,” he added.
