Sharjah Police arrest beggar with Dh14,000 cash

Sharjah

Sharjah Police arrested a beggar who managed to collect Dh14,000 in just three days near a mosque. The anti-begging team under the Special Tasks Department conducted the operation as part of an ongoing crackdown.

Authorities Intensify Crackdown During Ramadan

Since the start of Ramadan, authorities across the UAE have been cracking down on illegal begging. They have launched awareness campaigns and made several arrests. Offenders face heavy fines and possible jail terms.

In this case, a community member reported an Arab man begging near a mosque. He falsely claimed financial hardship. Police quickly dispatched a patrol and arrested him. Later, investigations revealed that he was residing illegally and had amassed a large sum through begging.

Brigadier Al Rakan Omar Ghazal Al Shamsi, director of the Special Tasks Department, warned that begging is a security risk. He explained that many beggars manipulate people’s generosity to earn quick and illegal money.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Sharjah Police awareness campaign, “Begging is a Crime, and Giving is a Responsibility,” remains active. To combat this issue, police have increased patrols and stepped up enforcement efforts.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid giving money directly to beggars. Instead, they should report such cases by calling 80040 or the call center at 901.

Begging Crackdown Extends to Other Emirates

In Dubai, police arrested 127 beggars in the first half of Ramadan. They also confiscated over Dh50,000 from them. Additionally, authorities detained 375 street vendors for illegally selling food and counterfeit goods.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Police have also warned residents against engaging with beggars. Instead, they encourage people to donate only through official and approved charities.

Police across the UAE remain committed to eliminating begging and ensuring public safety. Authorities continue to monitor public spaces, especially during Ramadan, when some individuals turn begging into a seasonal profession.
