UAE driving schools prepare for new teen drivers

Teenagers in the UAE are excited as they can apply for driving licences starting March 29, 2025. Many who have already turned 17—or will soon—are eager to begin the process.

In October 2024, the UAE Government announced a new federal decree law on traffic regulations. The minimum age for obtaining a licence for cars and light vehicles was lowered from 18 to 17. According to the UAE Government Media Office, this change will officially take effect on March 29.

With this update, thousands of teenagers are now planning to register for their driving lessons. Many see this as an opportunity to gain independence at an earlier age. Parents, however, have mixed opinions. While some support the decision, others worry about road safety and young drivers’ experience levels.

Driving schools across the UAE are preparing for an influx of new applicants. However, they are still waiting for more details from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Industry experts believe there will be changes in training programs to ensure young drivers meet safety standards.

Meanwhile, teenagers are actively gathering documents and researching driving schools. Social media platforms are buzzing with discussions about the new rule. Many young applicants are sharing their excitement and asking for advice on the licensing process.

Experts suggest that this change will lead to higher demand for driving instructors and lessons. Car rental companies may also introduce special packages for young drivers. Additionally, insurance providers might adjust their policies to accommodate younger licence holders.

As the implementation date approaches, both authorities and parents will closely monitor the impact of this decision. While young drivers look forward to hitting the road, safety remains a top priority for regulators and driving schools.
