Bodour Al Qasimi

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), inaugurated the groundbreaking archaeological exhibition From Sharjah to Rome via the Spice Route. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, marked the first Arab exhibition hosted at the historic Curia Julia in the Colosseum Archaeological Park.

The exhibition, organized by Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA), features 110 rare artifacts unearthed from key archaeological sites in Sharjah, such as Mleiha and Dibba Al-Hisn. These ancient treasures vividly illustrate Sharjah’s crucial role in the trade networks linking the East and West during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Visitors can explore remarkable items like Roman glass flasks, a bronze statue of Venus, and coins from Roman and Greek empires. Notably, these artifacts showcase the cultural and economic exchanges that defined ancient trade routes.

Bodour Al Qasimi highlights Sharjah”s rich Culture

During the ceremony, Sheikha Bodour emphasized that the exhibition highlights Sharjah’s rich historical heritage and underscores its significant role in ancient trade networks. Mleiha, a vibrant urban center from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE, served as a vital trade hub. Discoveries of foreign-inspired coins and artifacts further underscore the city’s importance as a cultural and economic center.

Moreover, dignitaries and officials attended the opening ceremony, including Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Government Relations; H.E. Eisa Yousif, Director General of SAA; and Ms. Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. Their participation highlighted the exhibition’s role in fostering cultural collaboration and strengthening ties between the UAE and Italy.

This exhibition also demonstrates how Sharjah contributed to global trade networks through the Spice Route. The route facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and craftsmanship between Asia and Europe. Dibba Port played a critical role in hosting Roman goods and fostering trade interactions.

Furthermore, archaeological findings in Mleiha revealed coins and locally minted currency inspired by foreign designs. The adaptation of Roman artistic elements by Mleiha’s inhabitants reflects vibrant cultural interactions. Running until May 4, 2025, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Sharjah’s ancient trade heritage and its enduring cultural contributions.
