A tragic stampede at the Tirumala Tirupati Temple in Andhra Pradesh India claimed six lives and left 40 others injured. The incident occurred near Vishnu Nivasam on Wednesday evening during token distribution for Vaikunta Dwara Darshan.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu immediately called for a review meeting to address the situation. Additionally, he announced plans to visit the temple site and assess the measures needed to prevent such incidents.
TDP National Spokesperson Prem Kumar Jain also commented on the issue. He said, “The stampede claimed six lives and injured 40 devotees. The government is taking all possible steps to avoid future tragedies. Proper arrangements will be implemented to ensure such incidents do not happen again.”
Furthermore, Jain reassured the public that an ex-gratia will be provided to the families of the deceased. He added that all necessary medical support is being offered to the injured.
Eyewitness Accounts Highlight Chaos
Eyewitnesses reported that the stampede occurred when police opened the gates for token distribution. The sudden surge of male pilgrims rushing forward caused injuries, particularly to women and children.
One eyewitness stated, “We joined the queue at 11 a.m. and were given milk and biscuits while waiting. However, as soon as the gates opened, chaos erupted. Male pilgrims rushed in, injuring several women, including six members of my family.”
Meanwhile, the husband of one victim, Mallika, recounted how his wife tragically lost her life while trying to obtain tickets. He shared, “The rush during token distribution caused her death. Our relatives are now on their way to support us.”
India Government and National Response
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences on social media. She stated, “I am distressed by the loss of lives in the Tirupati stampede. My heartfelt prayers are with the bereaved families.”
The Vaikunta Dwara Darshan, scheduled from January 10 to 19, draws thousands of devotees seeking Lord Venkateswara’s blessings. However, this incident has raised concerns about safety protocols.
