OpenAI CFO: 75% of revenue comes from paid consumer subscriptions

OpenAI relies heavily on individual consumers for its revenue, with 75% coming from paid subscriptions, said CFO Sarah Friar. OpenAI’s premium plan for ChatGPT starts at $20 per month, underscoring a significant consumer demand for advanced AI tools.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Friar noted the rapid expansion of OpenAI’s consumer base, which has driven much of the company’s growth. Despite the company’s young enterprise offerings, they already contribute substantially to revenue. OpenAI recently announced it had surpassed one million paid users for its business-focused ChatGPT services, such as ChatGPT Team and Enterprise, as well as ChatGPT Edu for universities.

Friar highlighted the strength of the consumer market, with ChatGPT currently boasting 250 million active weekly users. OpenAI has successfully converted 5% to 6% of these users to paid plans, helping it generate robust revenue despite the intense competition within the AI industry.

While OpenAI’s revenue is rising, so are its operational costs due to the continuous development of advanced AI systems. To support this, the company recently raised $6.6 billion and secured a $4 billion line of credit from global banks.

Friar emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to advancing AGI (artificial general intelligence) for humanity’s benefit. Aiming to support this vision, OpenAI is working to establish a global coalition to enhance AI infrastructure, including a U.S.-based data center expansion that could reach 5 gigawatts of capacity.

“We’re breaking new ground here,” Friar stated. “Infrastructure is the foundation of our future.”
