What Happened Overnight
Imran Khan was transported from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad during the night of August 20 to 21. The transfer followed an interim order issued by the Supreme Court on August 18.
A team of doctors conducted a detailed medical assessment. Khan’s sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, remained present during the examination and treatment.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that Khan was medically fit. After the examination, he was taken back to Adiala Jail.
Around 800 law enforcement personnel were deployed around Shifa International Hospital before Khan’s visit. Barricades were also placed, while access to nearby roads was restricted. PTI had asked supporters to stay away from the hospital and avoid disrupting the medical process.
What the Supreme Court Ordered
The Supreme Court’s three-member bench, headed by Justice Shahid Waheed, ordered the government to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days of its August 18 ruling.
The court said the state has a constitutional and legal responsibility to protect the life, health, dignity and security of people in custody.
The court also stated that imprisonment does not remove a prisoner’s right to humane treatment and necessary medical care. Its interim directions allowed Khan’s personal physician and sister to remain involved in his medical care. The court also called for greater family contact.
The government challenged the order, calling it discriminatory and arguing that prison rules should control inmate transfers. However, the Supreme Court registrar’s office returned the government’s review petition on Thursday because of incomplete paperwork. The original order therefore remained in place.
Khan Returns to Adiala Jail
The overnight hospital visit ended with Khan returning to prison after doctors declared him fit.
The article draws attention to his return as a contrast with previous cases involving Pakistani political leaders who left the country for medical treatment. It specifically mentions Nawaz Sharif’s medical departure to London and the long period that followed.
Khan has remained imprisoned since 2023. He is serving a sentence in the £190 million corruption case while facing several other legal cases that he denies.
Medical reports submitted to the Supreme Court have mentioned health concerns including fluctuating blood pressure, palpitations, headaches and an eye condition requiring treatment.
Despite these concerns, Imran Khan Medically Fit became the outcome of the latest hospital assessment, after which he returned to Adiala Jail.
What Happens Next
The hospital visit has temporarily eased the dispute over Khan’s immediate medical treatment. However, disagreements between PTI and the government over his imprisonment, healthcare access and family contact remain unresolved.
A medical board that examined Khan earlier in August recommended changes to his prison routine. These included daily walking, relaxation, greater access to reading and television, and more frequent interaction with close family members.
Whether these recommendations will be implemented remains to be seen.
Khan has spent more than two years in prison and has faced several legal cases. For now, he remains in Adiala Jail after being examined at Shifa International Hospital and declared medically fit.
