Eligible visitors, employees and residents can change immigration status inside the UAE by securing a new permit, completing cancellation requirements and applying before deadlines expire.

UAE visa holders can switch to a new immigration status without leaving the country, provided they meet the requirements for their new visa category and complete the required cancellation and status amendment procedures.
The process allows eligible visitors, employees and residents to activate a new visa or residence status while remaining in the UAE, removing the need to exit and re-enter the country solely to complete the immigration change.
In Dubai, status amendment applications are handled through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, or GDRFA Dubai, as well as Amer Service Centres. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, or ICP, manages corresponding federal residence services.
Applicants must first secure the new visa or entry permit for the residence category they intend to enter. Existing residents may also need to cancel their previous residence permit before the new status can be activated.
Required documents can include passport copies, records of cancelled visas or permits and the newly issued entry permit. Depending on the visa category, applicants may also need to complete medical fitness tests, Emirates ID registration, employment approvals or sponsorship procedures.
GDRFA Dubai requires applicants to have a new visa before submitting a status amendment request. Where relevant, the previous residence permit must be cancelled as part of the process.
The status amendment application can then be submitted through GDRFA’s digital channels, an Amer Service Centre or relevant ICP platforms. GDRFA Dubai lists a status amendment fee of AED500, excluding additional service charges, and says complete applications can be processed within about 48 hours.
For those moving from a visit visa to employment, the sequence generally includes work permit approval, issuance of an entry permit, status change, medical testing, Emirates ID procedures and final residence permit issuance.
Private-sector employees may also complete linked employment and residency procedures through the UAE Work Bundle, which brings together several services, including work permits, residency procedures and Emirates ID issuance.
However, changing status inside the UAE does not remove other requirements associated with the new visa. Applicants must still meet medical, employment, identity and sponsorship conditions applicable to their chosen residence category.
Visa holders are also advised to closely monitor expiry dates during the transition. UAE authorities apply overstay penalties of AED50 per day for unlawful stays, subject to any applicable grace period.
Timing can be particularly important when an employer cancels an existing residence visa before a replacement permit is ready. Applicants and sponsors should confirm the new permit, cancellation sequence and legal stay period before proceeding.
For eligible applicants, the in-country status amendment system provides a route to move to a new UAE visa category without an overseas exit, while ensuring all immigration and residency requirements are completed within the required deadlines.
