In a nearly 6,000-word essay published on his Gates Notes website, Gates described the coming transition as potentially one of the most turbulent periods in human history. He warned that AI is different from earlier economic disruptions because it can replace human thinking as well as physical tasks.
AI Could Permanently Remove Some Jobs
Gates said AI-related job losses could be different from unemployment caused by an economic downturn. During the Great Depression, unemployment eventually declined as the economy recovered. However, jobs removed by AI may not return.
Entry-level and mid-level positions could face particular pressure. New jobs may also appear, but some could require skills that take years to develop.
Gates expects AI to affect more than office work. Advances in robotics could also disrupt physical jobs. Law, customer service, healthcare, software and manufacturing could all experience major changes.
Gates Suggests ‘Human Reserved’ Work
One of Gates’ notable ideas is creating a category called “Human Reserved” work. These would be jobs that society chooses to keep for people, even when AI could perform them.
Healthcare is one example. Gates said a machine may eventually be able to deliver difficult medical news. However, society may still decide that such conversations should remain human.
Education and healthcare professionals could continue using AI while keeping important human responsibilities.
Could Governments Tax AI And Robots?
Gates also suggested reconsidering taxes that encourage companies to replace workers with technology. He proposed exploring taxes on robots and the use of AI services.
The revenue could support retraining programmes and social assistance. This could also help governments deal with reduced income-tax revenue if employment declines.
The Bill Gates AI warning goes beyond jobs. He also highlighted risks involving cyberattacks, biological threats and increasingly powerful AI systems.
Gates believes AI can improve healthcare, education and agriculture. However, he says governments must act now to ensure its benefits are widely shared while limiting the risks.
