5 essential steps to consider when changing jobs in the UAE

If you’ve just landed a job offer, well done! But before you make the move there are a few things to think about regarding your transition from your current position.

This guide provides an overview of key steps and factors to consider when changing jobs in the private sector of the UAE.

1. Understanding Your Notice Period

Begin by examining your employment contract to determine the required notice period, usually spanning between 30 and 90 days. Outliers may exist based on the conditions of your agreements. Informing your manager in person and submitting a written resignation are both crucial steps in the process. Include your notice period and last working day in your resignation letter, which can be submitted via email. If your new employer requires an immediate start, be prepared to pay your current employer for the notice period.

2. When Will You Receive Your Gratuity?

If you work continuously for at least one year, you are entitled to a gratuity according to UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021) when your employment ends. Your employer is required to make this payment 14 days following the termination of your contract. You can inform MOHRE about any delays via their hotline (800 60), app, or website (mohre.gov.ae).

3. Handling Loans During Job Transitions

If you have loans or credit card payments, keep in mind that banks might hold back your gratuity to settle unpaid debts. Loan contracts usually have provisions that permit banks to seize end of service benefits for this reason. To prevent any issues it’s wise to discuss your job change with the bank and look into options that can make the transition smoother.

4. New Visa Processing Timeline

If you hold a self sponsored visa such as a Golden or Green Visa you just have to await your new work permit from MOHRE. On the hand if your existing visa is sponsored by a company you’ll need to cancel it before your new employer can initiate the application for a visa. Although this procedure typically takes around 10 days there might be some occasional delays.

5. Do You Need to Reapply for ILOE?

Great news! You won’t have to submit a new application for the Involuntary Loss of Employment (ILOE) insurance program when changing jobs. The ILOE coverage is tied to you personally rather than your employer. Just make sure to keep up with your payments promptly since any delay could jeopardize your eligibility for a payout if you were to lose your job.
