Ex-England cricketer Graham Thorpe passes away

Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe, aged 55, tragically passed away after being struck by a train at Esher railway station in southwest London on August 4.

The inquest into his death revealed that Thorpe, who had been battling severe mental health issues, took his own life. His wife, Amanda Thorpe, confirmed the news during an interview, revealing that the former cricketer had attempted suicide two years earlier.

The Surrey Coroner’s Court stated that Thorpe died from multiple traumatic injuries, with the coroner extending condolences to his family and those who were impacted by his life and career.

Thorpe, who was admired for his elegance on the cricket field, represented England in 100 Test matches and 82 one-day internationals between 1993 and 2005, scoring over 9,000 runs, including 16 Test centuries. Despite his impressive career, Thorpe struggled with mental illness in recent years, a battle that ultimately led to his untimely death.

Amanda Thorpe and their daughter, Kitty, emphasized the importance of openly discussing mental health, stressing that there is no shame or stigma in addressing such issues. Kitty, 22, stated, “There is nothing to hide,” highlighting the family’s commitment to raising awareness about mental health challenges.

Thorpe’s passing has left the cricket world in mourning, as colleagues and fans remember not only his contributions to the sport but also the deep personal struggles he faced off the field. The full inquest into his death will be scheduled at a later date.
