India World Cup Future remains uncertain as head coach Gautam Gambhir avoids commenting on the long-term plans for senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both players, active only in the 50-over format, have been included in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, with a combined 567 ODI appearances, bring valuable experience to the team. However, their roles beyond this series are unclear. Gambhir praised their quality and leadership but stressed the importance of focusing on the present rather than planning for the 2027 World Cup.
“The 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away,” Gambhir said after India’s Test series win over the West Indies. “They are quality players, and their experience will help in Australia. I hope they have a successful tour, and as a team, we perform well.”
India is gradually moving toward a new generation of players. Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as ODI captain, signaling the start of a transition phase in Indian cricket. Rohit, who will be 40 by the next World Cup, and Kohli, 39, may find it challenging to maintain their place until 2027.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s India World Cup Future is also in question after being dropped from the ODI squad. The 37-year-old said the selectors clearly explained his exclusion and expressed hope of returning stronger.
As India focuses on building for the future, Gambhir’s silence suggests that the team’s World Cup vision now centers on nurturing young talent while still respecting the legacy of its senior stars.
