UAE Establishes National Media Authority, Reshaping the Country’s Media Landscape

The UAE has launched the National Media Authority, replacing WAM and media councils to unify messaging, regulate content, strengthen global outreach, and modernize the country’s media ecosystem.

WEBDESK — In a major restructuring of the UAE’s media ecosystem, the government has issued a Federal Decree-Law establishing the National Media Authority (NMA), a new federal entity tasked with overseeing, unifying, and advancing the country’s media sector.

The newly formed authority will replace the UAE Media Council, the National Media Office, and the Emirates News Agency (WAM), assuming all their responsibilities, rights and obligations, including those outlined in existing contracts and agreements.

The move aims to streamline media governance, unify national messaging and strengthen the UAE’s global media presence through a coordinated and future-focused framework.

A Unified Vision for National Media

According to the decree-law, the National Media Authority will work to align media policies at both federal and local levels while shaping strategic national messaging. It will guide the development of legislation, policies and regulatory frameworks to support a modern, competitive and credible media sector.

The authority will also oversee licensing and regulation of all media activities — including digital platforms, publishing, and free zone entities — ensuring compliance with unified national standards.

Strengthening Media Governance and Crisis Response

A key mandate of the authority includes establishing professional content standards and monitoring all media output across the UAE, whether printed, broadcast or digital. It will also lead efforts to combat misinformation, address misleading content, and enhance preparedness for media crises.

The decree further empowers the authority to develop rapid-response mechanisms and early-warning systems to counter digital threats and disinformation campaigns, reinforcing the UAE’s information security.

Global Reach and National Representation

The National Media Authority will oversee the development of WAM as the UAE’s official global news platform, supporting multilingual content distribution and international outreach. It will also establish a worldwide network of correspondents and media offices.

In addition, the authority will manage the accreditation of foreign media entities, oversee official media delegations abroad, and represent the UAE in regional and international media forums.

Expanded Powers and Governance Structure

Under the new law, the authority is authorized to establish or own limited liability companies and hold shares in media-related entities, subject to Cabinet approval. It will be governed by a board of trustees, supported by a secretary-general responsible for implementing its strategic objectives.

The move marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s evolving media strategy, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, credibility and global influence.
