UAE Cybersecurity Council warns of open Wi-Fi risks as more than 12,000 public network breaches have been reported since January 2025. These cases make up nearly 35 per cent of all cyberattacks in the country, showing how hackers are using unsecured connections in cafes, airports, and malls to steal sensitive data like passwords and banking details.
The Council explained that attackers often launch “man-in-the-middle” schemes. In such cases, cybercriminals intercept communications, redirect users to fake websites, record calls, or even install spyware on devices without notice. This makes public Wi-Fi one of the easiest entry points for online theft.

Second, activate safe-browsing features to block harmful websites. Third, avoid logging into sensitive accounts, such as banking or email, while using public Wi-Fi.
Dr Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of the Council, stressed that protecting citizens’ digital safety is a national priority. “The UAE is working to create a secure online environment that strengthens trust in our digital ecosystem,” he said.
The Council also reminded users that awareness is the strongest line of defence. While VPNs and security tools help, avoiding risky behavior on public Wi-Fi is the key to reducing threats.
