UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan received Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Abu Dhabi on Monday, August 17, for high-level discussions focused on strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two Gulf neighbours.

According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the leaders reviewed ways to expand cooperation, particularly across the economic and development sectors, while supporting shared priorities and the prosperity and wellbeing of both countries’ populations.
Sultan Haitham arrived in the UAE earlier on Monday for what was described as a fraternal visit. He was welcomed at the Presidential Airport in Abu Dhabi by Sheikh Mohamed, accompanied by senior UAE officials.
Economic and Development Cooperation Takes Priority
The discussions placed particular emphasis on economic and development cooperation, reflecting the two countries’ efforts to deepen practical collaboration and support common development priorities.
However, the official statement did not announce a new investment package, financial commitment or specific number of agreements resulting from Monday’s meeting. The focus remained on strengthening cooperation and continued consultation rather than announcing a new commercial deal.
The UAE and Oman have maintained institutional mechanisms for bilateral cooperation for decades. Their Joint Supreme Committee was established in 1991 and has provided a framework for cooperation in areas including economic, commercial, cultural and educational affairs. Regional Security Adds Strategic Importance
Beyond bilateral relations, Sheikh Mohamed and Sultan Haitham exchanged views on regional and international developments, with particular attention to the serious situation in the Middle East.
Both leaders stressed the importance of strengthening security, stability and peace across the region. They also reaffirmed their commitment to continued consultation as Gulf countries confront shared regional challenges
The emphasis on continued coordination is significant given Oman’s longstanding diplomatic role in regional affairs and the UAE’s broader engagement on issues affecting Gulf and Middle Eastern stability.
Senior Officials Join High-Level Talks
The meeting brought together senior officials from both governments.
The UAE side included Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance; Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other senior officials.
Oman’s delegation included Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, and Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat, alongside other ministers and senior officials
A Relationship With Broader Regional Significance
Monday’s meeting represents another high-level engagement between two neighbouring Gulf states whose relationship spans political, economic and social dimensions.
The leaders’ latest discussions also follow a phone call on July 16, 2026, when Sheikh Mohamed and Sultan Haitham discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest
With economic development and regional stability both featuring prominently in the latest talks, the meeting signals continued efforts by Abu Dhabi and Muscat to strengthen coordination while navigating a challenging regional environment.
For now, the key outcome is a renewed commitment to closer cooperation and consultation rather than a newly announced financial agreement. The meeting nevertheless reinforces the strategic importance both governments place on maintaining strong bilateral ties and coordinated approaches to regional challenges.
