Ashwin explained that T20 leagues are growing rapidly across the world. At the same time, Test cricket still holds traditional value. This leaves ODI cricket stuck in the middle. He said this balance is hurting the format and raising serious questions about its long-term future.
The former India all-rounder also spoke about the role of star players. Ashwin said players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still draw fans to ODI matches. He pointed to their return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy as proof. Viewership increased the moment they played. He warned that interest could fall sharply once these stars retire from ODIs.
ODI cricket decline 2027 is also linked to the ICC calendar, Ashwin said. He criticised the growing number of ICC tournaments. He feels frequent World Cups reduce excitement and importance. According to him, revenue should not come at the cost of value. He suggested the ICC learn from football’s World Cup model.
Ashwin offered a clear solution. He said the ODI World Cup should be held once every four years. He added that T20 leagues should continue to grow separately. This gap would help fans build anticipation and reconnect with the 50-over game.
