London Mayor Sadiq Khan has moved past his public feud with US President-elect Donald Trump, signaling a reset in relations. On Tuesday, Khan joined other prominent figures in Britain’s Labour government, softening his earlier criticism of Trump.
Speaking to AFP, Khan acknowledged the US election results, stating, “The American people have spoken loudly and clearly. As someone who believes in democracy, we must respect the election results. The American people have chosen Donald Trump as their president.”
A History of Disputes between Sadiq Khan, Trump
Sadiq Khan, one of Britain’s most prominent Asian-origin politicians, had a long-standing dispute with Trump during his first presidency. The tension began when Khan criticized Trump’s US travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries.
In response, Trump accused Khan of performing poorly on terrorism-related issues. Furthermore, he labeled Khan a “stone cold loser” and “very dumb.” This exchange ignited a public war of words between the two leaders.
The conflict escalated further in 2018 during Trump’s visit to London. Khan permitted a blimp, depicting Trump as a diaper-clad baby, to fly over protests. Moreover, in a podcast recorded before Trump’s re-election, Sadiq Khan accused him of targeting him based on ethnicity and religion.
A Shift in Approach of Sadiq Khan
However, Khan’s latest comments indicate a shift in tone, aligning with the Labour government’s approach to fostering diplomacy. He expressed optimism about rebuilding US-UK relations.
“As a proud patriot, I look forward to the continuation of our special relationship,” Khan said. “Let’s wait and see what kind of president Donald Trump will be.” He also extended his best wishes to Trump, showing a willingness to move forward.
This conciliatory tone reflects a broader trend among Labour leaders, including Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Despite previously labeling Trump a “sociopath,” Lammy recently dismissed these remarks as “old news.”
With these shifts, Khan and Labour leaders are focusing on strengthening the US-UK relationship. This approach signals a new chapter in their diplomatic ties, aiming for cooperation and mutual prosperity.
