From Daily Jobs to Asia Cup: Inspiring Journey of Oman Cricketers

From daily jobs to Asia Cup — the journey of Oman’s cricketers is nothing short of remarkable. For many players, cricket began as a side passion while they worked office jobs. They started on cement wickets before moving to AstroTurf in 2008, and finally got a turf ground in 2011.

Captain Jatinder Singh says the path was never easy. “We often wondered if it was worth the effort,” he recalls. But the hunger to play kept them going. Today, Jatinder has scored 1,704 runs in 36 ODIs, including four centuries, and 1,120 runs in T20Is.

All-rounder Sufyan Mehmood also fought many battles, both on and off the field. His family urged him to quit cricket and focus on studies, but he stayed determined. His proudest moment came in 2016 when Oman played in the World Cup after qualifying through the T20 World Cup Qualifier.

From daily jobs to Asia Cup, Oman cricket has come a long way. Their breakthrough win against Namibia in 2015 and the shock victory over Ireland in the 2016 World T20 changed the nation’s cricketing future.

Now, Oman’s team prepares to face giants like Pakistan and India in the Asia Cup. For them, the tournament is more than a competition — it is a dream fulfilled. Players like Jatinder admire stars such as Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, hoping to learn from their experience.

With schools and academies in Oman starting structured cricket programs, the future looks brighter. But for now, the focus is firmly on the Asia Cup — where Oman is ready to fight, learn, and inspire.
